About WordsOfColor

A publishing home for stories that let Black children, families, and adults see themselves with seriousness, beauty, memory, and joy.

About WordsOfColor

African knowledge has been suppressed for centuries—from us and from our children. WordsOfColor exists to help correct that.

Our history was taken, rewritten, and handed back to us in a way that did more than change our identity. It limited our understanding of who we are, where we come from, and what we are truly capable of becoming.

In a world where Black and African history has been, and continues to be, suppressed, WordsOfColor serves as an underground railroad for knowledge. It is a path for the stories, teachings, and truths of Black culture to reach every person who wishes to embrace who they really are, where they come from, and all that our people have accomplished.

WordsOfColor teaches children to ask why things are taught the way they are. It encourages the critical thinking needed in the modern world: the ability to search for truth in a world filled with lies, misdirection, and narratives that have too often been used against Black people.

Born from the legacy of every person of color who came before us, WordsOfColor helps us stop looking for heroes and mentors manufactured to mislead us. Instead, it shows us and our children what we are capable of through the lives, stories, and accomplishments of people who look like us.

We are the culture. We are the origin of mankind. We are the future of humanity. The books we read will determine how we see ourselves in that future—and what we believe we can accomplish.

WordsOfColor is a publishing home for stories that let Black children, families, and adults see themselves with seriousness, beauty, memory, and joy.

WordsOfColor exists because books shape what children think is possible. The catalog begins with digital books, but the deeper work is cultural: creating stories that make identity visible, ordinary, imaginative, and strong.

Our Goal

WordsOfColor creates books that give children, starting from age three, an understanding of the world based on truth: how the world works, where they fit within it, and the power they carry within themselves.

By understanding their identity, and by connecting that identity to real history, children build a firm foundation for who they are and what they can accomplish in the world.

Even when schools teach them a Eurocentric curriculum, they will already have a deeper understanding of their own history. They will begin to recognize how the world has been shaped, how narratives have been controlled, and how systems have often been skewed against them.

WordsOfColor also builds the skill of critical thinking. Children learn to ask: Why am I being taught this? From whose perspective is this story being told? What is the truth behind what I am reading?

Most importantly, Black children grow up proud of who they are. From an early age, they know they too can achieve greatness and be proud in their skin. Even if the world is unfair, they understand why it has treated them that way in particular—and their minds cannot be shackled by the same narratives that were designed to hold them back.

While others try to erase our history, we continue to preserve it, protect it, and pass it on to a new generation. Through our stories, we shape young minds toward confidence, excellence, resilience, and greatness—even in the face of adversity.
